This article presents and analyses the findings of a qualitative study about the perceptions expressed by prospective primary teachers of English about integration and response to special educational needs in the mainstream. The analysis of the data, obtained in the course of the practice teaching period of their course, evidences their ideas on integrative education; besides, a frequent lack of experiences of genuine integrative practices in such a critical period of professional preparation is identified. Communities of practice can become a perfect place where teachers can reflect on their practice, share approaches, experiment with new content and new practices. The interaction between teachers in a community of practice encourages peer learning and stimulates problem solving. The present work, centered on the reciprocal teaching and project based learning methodologies, involved 195 disability and inclusion pre-service teachers and gave them the opportunity to experience the integration of the two teaching / learning models through which they learned how to collaborate and achieve results in effective way and working with others.

The first part of the paper presents some theoretical reflections and some methodological notes about a Professional Development (PD) path worked out during the last two years by Italian researchers for prospective primary teachers. The aim of robust social learning networks such as eTwinning, which is a part of Erasmus internationality programs, is to foster and promote the creation and development of awareness for respect, tolerance,and understanding by ensuring the integration of young people from different countries and cultures through dialogue.
